The Sufi Movement in Australia & Augustine contemplative path

presents

A very rare and unique experience for lovers of Indian Classical Sacred music and those seekers of a deep inner meditative experience.

‘Before its incarnation the soul is sound.

It is for this reason that we love sound.’      Hazrat Inayat Khan quoted in The Mysticism of Sound and Music

Hazrat Inayat Khan, who was himself an accomplished Vina player, used  music and sound as a mode for raising consciousness and our own vibrations to a very fine high level in spiritual practice.

Dr Mustafa Raza  Master of the Vichiter Vina

24th March  7.30pm  at the Augustine Centre.

2 Minona  St. Hawthorn  Melway 45E11

25 March 10.30am-12.00 Soul food café: (Augustine centre )

A further exploration around sound and healing with Dr. Mustafa Raza, Shaika  Nuria Irene Daly and Rev. Paul Sanders.

The Vichiter Vina  is the rarest of the three Indian Vinas, indeed Vichiter means unique, but it has also been called the Shiv Vina – dedicated to the God Shiva. This vina is so rare because in this instrument there is no Swar, this is created with the help of a polished glass stone held in the left hand, with the vina  played with the thumb and two Mizrabs on the fingers of the right hand. Dr Raza is the last and only traditional player of this instrument left in the world. The Vichiter Vina has four main strings, three front side strings along with two Chikaris (high pitch strings) and 15 Tarabs (resonance strings) giving the instrument a superb range of four octaves. The Vina plays an important part in Indian spirituality – the Vedic rituals and in Sufi mystical practice.

Dr Mustafa Raza was born in 1958, into a famous Beenkar Gharana (family of musical masters) who have been masters of the Vichiter Veena for many generations. This Chirana or musical lineage has an important place in Indian Classical music. Dr Raza was trained by his father Ustad Ahmed Raza Khan a great maestro of the Vichiter Veena. Both his father and his Grandfather Ustad Chaji Khan were court musicians. Dr Raza is an ‘All India Grade-A musical master and plays in concerts in Europe and at classical Indian festivals. His style demonstrates incomparable quality and technical mastery and shows his capability in long Alaaps (slow and improvised  movements) and in rare ragas and extremely fast improvisations on this extremely difficult instrument.
